Course Description:

For centuries the fine art of chasing and repoussè has been widely prized and used to adorn sculptural and functional pieces in metal such as hollowware, jewelry, and other metal art.

This workshop will introduce students to a basic foundation in skill development within the technique of chasing and repoussè.  Students will learn to chase designs on the front of the metal, raise the metal from the back, and finish work with the final chasing of details on the front.  We will explore and discuss basic tool shape and their application for sculpting metal.  By using simple shapes and designs most commonly found in ornamental chasing, the students will be presented with an understanding of how various chisels and punches correspond in application to moving and sculpting flat metal into a three-dimensional work of art.

Essential Skills Learned in Chasing & Repoussé:

  • Working with pitch and understanding its properties
